A sketch of the maze found in the Abbey of St. Berlin in St. Omer, France.

A garden maze at the Governor’s Palace in Williamsburg, Virginia.

A garden maze from Architectura Curiosa by G. A. Boeckler, 1664.

Fear not! For those of us who do not want to just try to solve a maze by randomly proceeding along its path or who do not have access to computers or trained rats, the French mathematician M. Trémeaux 62 devised a foolproof general method that works on any maze.

Method: 1) As you go through the maze, constantly draw a line to the right.

2) Whenever you come to a new juncture take any path you like.

3) If on your new path you come to an old juncture or dead end, turn and go back the way you came.

4) If returning on an old path you come to an old juncture, take any new path, if there is one. Otherwise take an old path.

5) Never enter a path marked on both sides.
